Dr Shariff obtained his PhD-Engineering degree from Jadavpur University, India for his work in the field of Laser Surface Engineering. He had 24+ years of experience in the research field of laser-based engineering/technology applications and currently holds a Scientist-F position at ARCI, an autonomous research organization under DST, Govt. of India. His works encompass the development of various laser-based applications involving machining, joining, surface engineering and metal-based additive & deposition technologies utilizing high-power industrial lasers integrated to CNC and Robotic Workstations. Dr Shariff had successfully developed more than fifteen laser-based processing technologies for Defence, Aerospace, Automotive, Medical, Energy, Power, Nuclear and Engineering sectors. He was instrumental in setting up a couple of laser processing systems at various private as well as Govt-funded Industrial and research organizations. He successfully completed several funded projects involving Govt. and MNC organizations such as DST, DHI, BHEL, BRNS, WABCO, TDB, BDL, TSL, NTPC, GTRE, TVS, DRDO, GE, NEI, Hoganas, Fraunhofer-Institutions, etc., and worked as PI/Co-PI in international collaborative programs with USA, Germany, Israel and Sweden. Till date, he published 85+ technical papers in peer-reviewed international journals and 25+ publications in conference proceedings and a book chapter. He currently filed/holds 12 patents for his process inventions. He delivered 35+ invited/contributory/plenary lectures at various symposiums and conferences. He supervised 3 Doctoral, 30+ engineering graduate/post-graduate thesis works (including on-going). He received several awards such as Distinguished Scientist Award-VIF (2016), Bharat Vidya Ratan Awardâ€“IBC (2019), Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Education Excellence Award â€“ AAHEG (2020), etc. He is life-member of professional societies such as IIW, ILA, COD, TSI, MRSI, SAE and also serving as Editorial Board Member/Reviewer for various International Journals. He is also Member â€“ board of studies and General Body for couple of Engineering Institutions and also served as adjunct faculty for Mechanical Engineering and Board Member for DSC committees. His areas of expertise include technology development involving Laser surface modification, laser machining, laser joining and laser based additive and deposition manufacturing; Statistical/Analytical/FEM modelling of laser manufacturing processes, Materials characterization, Tribology, Mechanical Behaviour of Materials and failure analysis.
