DR. SAYANTAN SENGUPTA

Sayantan Sengupta is a faculty in NIT Durgapur, India. He holds the post of Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department. He completed B. Tech. (Mechanical) from Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College in 2009. After that, he joined as an M. Tech. Student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of IIT Kharagpur. He completed his M. Tech. in 2011 and was awarded a PhD in 2017 from the same Institute. His expertise includes analytical fluid Mechanics and heat transfer, CFD, condensation, solar energy, Tesla turbine, rotational flow and optimization techniques. He is the author of about 19 technical papers published in reputed international journals and three more papers in prestigious international conferences. In 2016, Sengupta’s publication entitled ‘The physics of pressure variation in microchannels within corotating or static discs’ in the journal ‘Physics of Fluids’ was highlighted as “Editor’s Picks”. In one of his recent works on ‘Characteristics of complex interaction between two oppositely-moving laminar buoyant plumes within slender vertical channels’ (published in the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer), he explored the interesting physics of secondary flow and oscillatory entrainment within the channel. He discovered two flow regimes: a highly rotational core region and a unidirectional near-wall region. He coined a new parameter called symmetry ratio, which determines channel pumping and thermal performance and controls the transition from anti-asymmetry to anti-symmetry. Sengupta’s detailed research on Tesla disc turbines gained popularity throughout the globe. He and his team are currently hunting for novel solutions for mitigating the global energy crisis. Sengupta has worked as a reviewer in various international journals of repute, viz. Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physics of Fluids, European Journal of Mechanics-B/Fluids, Fluid Dynamics Research, Energy-Conversion and Management, International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, and Journal of Molecular Liquids.
