New Study Highlights Gaps in Public Knowledge of Noncommunicable Diseases in Tamil Nadu

A recent study published in the Pondicherry Journal of Nursing reveals that while most adults
attending a government hospital in Cuddalore possess moderate awareness of
noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), significant knowledge gaps remain.
The research, led by Viruthasarani Kaliyamoorthy, assessed knowledge levels among 60
adults aged 35–55 years attending the Noncommunicable Disease Outpatient Department at
the Government Headquarters Hospital, Cuddalore.
Why This Research Matters
Noncommunicable diseases—including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and chronic
respiratory disorders—account for nearly 74% of global deaths. In India, they represent a
major public health challenge, contributing significantly to premature mortality.
Understanding public awareness is critical for strengthening prevention and early intervention
strategies.
What the Study Found
Using a structured questionnaire and descriptive research design, the study found:
 78.3% of participants had moderately adequate knowledge
 16.6% had inadequate knowledge
 Only 5% demonstrated adequate knowledge
The researchers identified a significant association between knowledge levels and the
duration of non-vegetarian food intake. However, no strong associations were found with
other demographic variables such as age, gender, income, or education.
Implications for Public Health
The findings suggest that although awareness exists, a comprehensive understanding of NCD
risk factors, prevention, and management remains limited. The study highlights the urgent
need for:
 Targeted health education programmes
 Lifestyle modification counselling
 Community-based awareness initiatives
 Focused interventions for low-income and vulnerable groups
The researchers recommend larger-scale studies and experimental designs incorporating
structured nursing interventions to further address knowledge gaps.
